Is this s**t, or what?

Posted by: prince vince In: News

dogfoulWe at S&G, prefer to focus on the positive aspects of life in Folkestone, so we are not going to rant on and on about how crap the latest dog-fouling initiative from the council really is. But to have the spacious and gracious areas of Folkestone adorned with eye-wateringly realistic photos of dog-shit, as part of a campaign to reduce the amount of actual dog-shit, seems, to us, to be a less-than brilliant idea.

Cllr Hugh Barker told me:

“Many campaigns, including the poster signs, have been welcomed in targeting the minority of dog owners who continue to be irresponsible”.

Well, I don’t have a dog, and I feel targeted by these signs. Let us know what you think.

As a responsible dog owner myself I am often appauled by the number of dog owners who do NOT clear up there dogs mess. Some dog owners feel it is acceptable to allow there dog to sh*t in the road..well its not. There has been many occasions I’ve walked it in my house.

Those who don’t clear up there dog mess from the beach are by far the worse offenders. Their behaviour will undoubtedly see the the council take steps to ban dogs all year round including the pebble beach.

Then there are the parks where man children play and once again dog sh*t everywhere, this stuff can cause blindness to children. I previously lived in London and I never saw this much sh*t.

For these reason these signs are needed, all we need now is for the fines to be implemented and those caught not clearing it up a few days community service clearing up dog shit from our fantastic town.

Dog shit on the street is unpleasant but far worse is human piss and shit. Don’t Folkestone’s drinkers and clubbers have responsible dogs to clear up after them.

I don’t think there is much of a debate to be had about whether or not dog excrement is unpleasant and undesirable. The point of the short article was to question whether the council’s poster-signs with photographs of dog excrement on, constitute the most appropriate approach to the problem. In my view, to identify that dog excrement along the Leas is disgusting, but to try and deal with the problem by displaying photographs of the thing you are trying to get rid of, defies logic and sound reason. We now have actual dog mess, AND pictures of dog mess.

I guess theory stems from that of the horrid pictures one now finds on cigarette packets these days. I say give it a try, if it reduces the amount of fouling being left behind, then all well and good. I wonder what the cost was of thinking of the idea, implementing the idea, signage..man hours in total. Probably could have employed some people to walk around monitoring and doing on the spot fines.
